Interview Questions – RAID Technology

The following job interview questions test interviewee’s knowledge and understanding of various RAID Levels and their advantage and disadvantages:

  1. How many I/O operations are issued by a RAID controller for a RAID5 write operation (lets assume 4 disks in total)?
  2. Compare and contrast RAID 4 and RAID 5 with respect to performance issues (read & write performances).
  3. Out of RAID10 and RAID01 – which is better for fault tolerance and why? (lets have 4 disks in total)
  4. What is RAID 5 Write Hole?
  5. What is degraded mode of operation?
  6. What is a Hot Spare?
  7. Calculate storage efficiency (in % terms) for the following configurations. Storage efficiency can be defined as the actual amount of real data than can be stored in a given storage system.

    a) RAID1 – Disk1 size 50 GB, Disk2 size 50 GB.
    b) RAID1 – Disk1 size 50 GB, Disk2 size 150 GB.
    c) RAID4 – Disk1 size 50 GB, Disk2 size 50 GB, Disk3 size 50 GB.
    d) RAID4 – Disk1 size 50GB, Disk2 size 100 GB, Disk3 size 150 GB.
    e) RAID4 – Disk1 size 50GB, Disk2 size 100 GB, Disk3 size 150 GB, Disk4 size 200GB.
    f) RAID5 – Disk1 size 50 GB, Disk2 size 50 GB, Disk3 size 50 GB.
    g) RAID5 – Disk1 size 50GB, Disk2 size 100 GB, Disk3 size 150 GB.
    h) RAID6 – Disk1 size 50 GB, Disk2 size 50 GB, Disk3 size 50 GB, Disk4 size 50 GB.
    i) RAID6 – Disk1 size 50 GB, Disk2 size 100 GB, Disk3 size 150 GB, Disk4 size 200 GB.
    j) Out of all RAID levels, Which RAID level has maximum storage efficiency?
