7. Intern should be able to understand the various effect of force and motion on the engineering design structures.

Engineering Mechanics Internship Test

Intern has to take Engineering Mechanics internship test in which they will be asked 50 multiple-choice questions. They have to score grade A or A* on this test to be eligible for the internship. Here’s a sample set of questions on the Engineering Mechanics topic.

1. Every point on the force vector is having the same magnitude and the same direction as the whole force vector have.
(A) True
(B) False
View Answer

Answer: B
Explanation: The vector is made by joining the final and the starting point. If we consider any arbitrary point then the length would be calculated w.r.t the starting point, which might give different magnitude but same direction.

2. We can add the force vectors directly. But with dividing each by it’s magnitude first.
(A) True
(B) False
View Answer

Answer: B
Explanation: False, because if you will divide the magnitude of the vector to itself than the resulting would be the unit vector. Which is just giving you the direction of the vector, not the vector itself. This means unit vector has direction same as it’s respective vector but having a magnitude equal to one.

3. A vector can always have_____________
(A) Only one component along any of the axis
(B) Only two components along any of the axis
(C) Only three components along any of the axis
(D) A unit vector along the direction perpendicular to its direction
View Answer

Answer: C
Explanation: All vectors have three components, whether they are zero or not. And unit vector is always in the direction of its vector. And the unit vector has the magnitude equal to unity. This means unit vector is the vector in the direction of the original vector and the magnitude of the same is unity.

4. The moment is the cross product of which two vectors?
(A) Force and Radius vectors
(B) Radius and Force vectors
(C) Force and Radius scalars
(D) Radius and Force scalars
View Answer

Answer: B
Explanation: The cross product needs to take in the proper sequence. If not taken then the answer is just the opposite of the true answer. That’s why, the answer is not the Force and Radius vectors, but the Radius and Force vectors. Because the moment has its direction, as many of the cross products have, and thus precaution needs to be taken.

5. If anybody is tied to three or more ropes, and then is allowed to achieve its equilibrium. Then the equilibrium achieved is achieved w.r.t what?
(A) The three axis of the body
(B) The ground
(C) The ropes direction
(D) The weight direction
View Answer

Answer: B
Explanation: Yes, the equilibrium is being achieved w.r.t the ground. Like the motion, w.r.t ground need be zero. That is the relative velocity of the object or the body must be zero w.r.t the ground. This means motion is in equilibrium.
