1. “Solid State Chemistry” by D K Chakrabarty
2. “Electronic Structure and Chemistry of Solids” by P A Cox

“Electronic Structure and Chemistry of Solids” Book Review: The book diverts from the traditional view of the subject. It describes the electronic structures and properties of solids. The descriptions are in terms which are understood by chemists. In the first three chapters, easy descriptions are given. These can be understood by undergraduate students. In the ending chapters, topics of current research are provided. These are presented in a more advanced manner. These are metal insulator transitions and low dimensional solids. They also include molecular metals and properties of surfaces. Various examples are given.

3. “Basic Solid State Chemistry” by Anthony R West

“Basic Solid State Chemistry” Book Review: This edition of the book is a revision of the previous introductory book. Latest approach for important topics is adopted. New topics are included in addition to the previous one’s. A new chapter on Synthetic methods describes solid state and precursor. It also describes chemie douce and intercalation. Gas phase, hydrothermal and other methods are also included. New material is included for fullerenes, spinels and phase diagram applications. There is an increase in data on solid solutions. There are improved diagrams, examples and problems.

4. “Solid State Chemistry and its Applications” by Anthony R West
5. “Solid State Electrochemistry and its Applications to Sensors and Electronic Devices” by K S Goto

“Solid State Electrochemistry and its Applications to Sensors and Electronic Devices” Book Review: This is based on the lecture notes of the author. They were for the course on physical chemistry of oxides at high temperatures. The book is a study on micromechanism of migration of ions and electronic defects. They are contained in solid and liquid oxides at high temperatures. This book is for graduate level students. It has 150 problems. Importance is given to understanding of simple theories. These are for transport of oxides. It can be used everywhere at low and high temperatures. It can also be used for various combinations of oxides.

6. “Diffusion in Ceramics (Solid Mechanics and Its Applications)” by Joshua Pelleg

“Diffusion in Ceramics (Solid Mechanics and Its Applications)” Book Review: This book is an introduction to changes in solids. These are studied at high temperature and in diffusion control. This book also presents research data The changes are related to kinetics of various reactions. These include precipitation, oxidase and phase transformation. They are also related to mechanical changes like creep. The book is divided into two parts. It starts with the basics of diffusion according to Fick’s laws. Solutions are given for Fick’s second law for constant D. Diffusion in grain boundaries and dislocations are included. This is described with an atomistic approach for random atomic motion. The second part has discussions on diffusion. These are done in several technologically important ceramics. The ceramics selected areA12O3, SiC, MgO, ZrO2 and Si3N4. A short and clear idea is given for treatment of diffusion of ceramics. It can be studied by undergraduate students and more. The book gives an overview of basic behaviour of metals. It helps to relate the observed physical properties to microscopic understanding. The book is a go to data collection for researchers. A fundamental understanding of atomic movements is supported.

7. “A New Approach to the Chemistry of the Solid State and Its Application to Problems in the Field of Silicate Industries” by Woldemar A Weyl

“A New Approach to the Chemistry of the Solid State and Its Application to Problems in the Field of Silicate Industries” Book Review: This book is based on lectures given in Charleroi, Belgium. They were given in 1956. They were sponsored by The National Glass Research Institute. They were published in Silicate Industries.

8. “Physics, Chemistry and Technology of Solid State Gas Sensor Devices” by Andreas Mandelis and Constantinos Christofides

“Physics, Chemistry and Technology of Solid State Gas Sensor Devices” Book Review: This book is based on the base principles of solid state sensor operation. It presents the importance of interdisciplinary science. This governs modern sensing devices. The book starts with the history and scientific background of the subject . The book then moves on to study the interactions of gases. These are studied with surfaces. Following chapters give data on the fabrication, performance, and application of a variety of sensors. Sensor devices studied are gas-sensitive solid state semiconductor sensors. Photonic and photoacoustic gas sensors are also given. Fiber optic sensors and Piezoelectric quartz crystal microbalance sensors are described. Other sensors studied are surface acoustic wave sensors, pyroelectric and thermal sensors. It can be used by analytical chemists using solid state sensors in environment-related analysis. It can also be used by electrical engineers working with solid state sensors. This book will increase and combine their knowledge of these devices.
